Kishorit, a non-profit company, was establishe Their objective was to establish a permanent home and workplace for this population, providing parents with the assurance their children would receive life-long care. The village is undergoing constant change in order to turn it into a community designed on the model of the Israeli kibbutz. Some of these modifications include integrating members in decision making procedures relating to their social and private lives. Dependent individuals with lack of motivation are encouraged to assume responsibility for their decisions and lives. The community currently houses some one hundred and fifty adult members, all taking an active role in community service and production businesses. The members are employed in businesses including: laundry, kitchen, wooden toy plant, goat farm, Kishorit TV department etc. In addition to rights and obligations of community living, the members also lead a full, active social life choosing to spend their free time in mutual visits, classes, watching TV or developing personal hobbies including embroidery, playing musical instruments etc. The physical conditions in the community contribute to the members’ ability to engage in their personal interests, living as “normal” a life as possible. Two members share an apartment with toilet, kitchen and two bedrooms. The houses are surrounded by gardens and trees overlooking the wonderful views of Teffen District. The members are free to leave the community and use services in the nearby town of Carmiel. For additional information about Kishorit please go to our website www.kishorit.org.
